Chestnut v. Merrill

Alabama

Chestnut v. Merrill (closed)

The NRF supported Chestnut v. Merrill, which alleged the state violated Section 2 in 2011 when it moved African American voters from majority-white districts into an existing majority-minority district instead of drawing the districts to create a second majority-minority congressional district for the state. On March 17, 2020, the district court declared the case moot and dismissed it without prejudice. In doing so, the court concluded that the requested relief could not be granted in time to have a meaningful impact on the 2020 congressional elections in the state.
